Convertibles for your business
SPONSORED Why a hybrid tablet/laptop may well be the best choice
The growing need for your business to provide tablets comes with some obvious challenges: nobody is prepared to give up the clear benefits of their laptop and with two devices you are going to need two licences for all of your software.
But there is a fast-growing solution to this problem in the shape of the convertible - a single device with all the flexibility of a laptop, but with the option of becoming a tablet.
There are several different hybrid options, but a good example is the fantastic Lenovo ThinkPad Helix.
It looks and feels just like an ultrabook - thin, powerful and with a fantastic keyboard - the kind of laptop that nobody is going to complain about using.
But the ThinkPad Helix's real magic comes courtesy of its detachable screen. When removed from the base you are getting a powerful tablet, bringing all the advantages of a full touch-enabled operating system in Windows 8.
That means all of your software will run, that it's as secure as any Windows PC, and you only need one software licence for both laptop and tablet, because it's a single device.
The ThinkPad Helix also has two more tricks up its sleek sleeves: you can attach the screen backwards to the traditional laptop setup in Display Mode that's ideal for showing off our presentation or watching media.
And you can flatten it down with the screen still attached to give yourself a tablet that makes up for a bit of extra heft with a big increase in battery life.
Lenovo describes its device as 'rip and flip' for obvious reasons, but that company's reputation for great build-quality means that you can rest assured those clever hinges are going to last.
Another option is the Lenovo Miix tablet which can become a fully-functioned business machine with the simple addition of a 'quick-flip' keyboard case, perfect for on-the-go productivity.
That's possible because of a vibrant 10.1 inch IPS screen, multitouch technology and the brilliant addition of Lenovo Motion Control that takes advantage of the built-in HD front camera.
Let's not leave our Veriface Face recognition software that means you can use your face as the password, and Lenovo Cloud Storage to protect your important files and data, and give you all of the easy access advantage of syncing your important documents to the cloud.
Some of you may favour a device where the keyboard is never detached from the screen, but that still allows you to twist your screen down over the top to turn it into a tablet when necessary.
Lenovo's ThinkPad Twist gives you just this option, and given its high-end specs it's no wonder TechRadar's review labelled it a 'serious workhorse' adding that it was "well-designed, sturdy and a strong performer".
In a world where more and more of us are looking at BYOD as a genuine option, the flexibility of something like a convertible makes it a great value option.
How about the Lenovo IdeaTab Lynx - a fabulous 11.6 inch IPS-toting tablet that weighs in at a tiny 640 grams and boasts a thickness of less than a centimetre.
But this device can move from being an amazing tablet to a brilliant laptop with an optional keyboard dock - converting it into a fantastic productivity tool.
Plus, it has those vital ports like a micro-USB, microSD, and micro-HDMI slot on the tablet and two USB 2.0 ports on the optional keyboard dock.
We should really also mention the Yoga range - another novel idea from Lenovo that is a perfect way to take advantage of all the versatility of Windows 8 through both touch and the more traditional desktop.
This versatile device's special talent is a hinge that allows you to fold the keyboard in four different cool configurations. The familiar laptop mode - giving you not only access to the fantastic chiclet keyboard but the perfect view of its high resolution touchscreen.
Then there's tablet mode, with the keyboard folded behind the screen - giving you a big, luscious tablet experience for when the keyboard is not needed
Plus because it's so flexible you can also fold the keyboard in to use as a stand or alternatively use Tent mode - which is brilliant for showing that crucial presentation.
The Lenovo Yoga comes in either 13-inch or 11 inch - giving you two great options depending on your business needs
Having a device that fits effortlessly into both our home life, bringing tablet functionality and all the joy of touch Windows 8 apps, and our business world, where having a keyboard and true Windows compatibility is crucial - is clear.
Paying out for two devices means that you are likely to have to make big compromises in terms of quality or compatibility
But when you can get hold of a single device that effortlessly serves both functions there is no need for this compromise at all. You are getting the power of a top end laptop, and the features of a top end tablet - without having to double up on software or services.
